A2849431 reclaims and reframes passport photo, signature and immigration processing elements from the Alien File of my great grandfather Carl Yoshiro Osawa. His A-file was the medium by which I tenderly met him for the first time. This piece was the place and space, beyond linear time, where I could intimately get to know and pass hours of that easeful kind of silence with him. It holds the complexity of an ancestor who was richly embedded in Seattle Nihonmachi’s (Japantown’s) social and business life, named by the federal government during WWII incarceration as a community leader, and yet not 'American enough' to be eligible for citizenship throughout much of his life.
